McDermott College of the Arts is a private, liberal arts college located in the small town of Westmont, Massachusetts. It is approximately three hours west of Boston, and about fifty minutes north of the city of Springfield. The sprawling, beautiful campus is situated on the outskirts of town. Founded in 1927 by Joshua P. McDermott, an actor and former vaudeville performer, the college offers a top-rated, exclusive education primarily focused on theatre, art, music, and creative writing. At its inception, it was devoted to theatre in particular; over sixty years, it has grown and expanded to specialize in all the areas of visual and performance art. McDermott is a small school with competitive admission, an undergraduate enrollment of less than 1500, and a graduate enrollment of only 250. It offers several majors in areas ranging from English to art to film editing, with an even broader range of minors and concentrations. It was named one of the top-ten arts colleges in the country, and has gained national recognition for its theatre department in particular. It follows a standard academic calendar, beginning in late August and continuing until May, including a winter study session and optional summer schedules. There are also several events that take place throughout the year, including but not limited to art shows, dance and music recitals, open mic nights, and major theatre productions. The McDermott community is a close-knit group of intense, driven young students who wish to pursue careers in a field of the creative arts. | ||
